The city of Austin is known throughout the state of Texas for having an excellent arts scene. From independent plays to well known musicals, you can have your pick on any given night. Throw in performances at the university and you have quite the menu to pick from. Here is a preview of just a few of the most exciting shows coming to the Austin area.
Playing right now, Disney’s The Lion King at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio is sure to be a favourite of everyone. One of the most successful Broadway shows in history is now touring, so don’t miss your chance to see one of the most remarkable productions in stage history.
The Capitol City Comedy Club plays host to Patrice O’Neil in mid-January. Patrice O’Neal is a rising star in the world of stand up comedy and is frequently on television on various shows. Don’t miss your chance to see one of the funniest men in America when he comes to Austin to perform. Shows are Friday and Saturday, January 22 and 23. Following on the heels of Patrice O’Neil, well known comedian and actor Kevin Nealon will be performing at the Capitol City Comedy Club, as well. You know Kevin from his stint on Saturday Night Live and on the current hit show Weeds. Kevin has been making people laugh for decades now so don’t miss your chance to see this funny man live when he comes to Austin during the last week in January.
The holiday season just won’t be the same without a performance of the classic ballet The Nutcracker. You don’t have to drive too far to see a wonderful rendition, either. Just down the highway in Corpus Christi at the Selena Auditorium you can find a top flight version of this wonderful ballet. Wow the kids and put a smile on the faces of adults with tickets to The Nutcracker. Shows are playing now through December 20. Tickets are very affordable, with the most expensive seat in the house only $16.50. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online through Ticketmaster.

Get into the holiday spirit this season with the Trans Siberian Orchestra. No other band has captured the imagination of the world with their unique sound and virtuoso playing quite like the Trans Siberian Orchestra. This amazing act will be in the greater Austin area in the days immediately after Christmas, December 28th, for two shows. If you are new to the TSO than this is a must see event. Hang onto your hats, Austin has never seen anything quite like this before.
If you love rap, funk and good times, check out the Goodie Mob with Scarface in Austin this January. A good time is sure to be had by all when this world famous rap group shows up in Austin to party. The show is scheduled for Saturday, January 16. Please take note of the late start time. The show is to begin at 11:00. If you’ve never been out to a show like this before, get ready, Austin may never be the same again.
Few bands had the impact during the 1990’s that Sublime did. While it is impossible to see Sublime live today, you can catch BadFish this January in Austin. Badfish is a premiere Sublime tribute band. They bring all of the same vibe, fun and spirit that Sublime once had. You know all of the words to several Sublime songs, so why not come out and sing them at the top of your lungs. The show is being held at Emos Austin on January 31. Showtime is at 10. You know you can count on Emos to be the premiere live music venue in the city.
If you are looking to venture outside of the Austin city limits to find live music, you will find that nearby San Antonio has quite a lot to choose from. Country music star Brad Paisley will be taking to the stage at the AT&T Centre in San Antonio this January. The show is January 7 at 7:30 and you don’t want to miss it. Brad has been one of the most successful country artists over the last few years and now is your chance to see why!

There is nothing quite like springtime in Austin. The air is fresh, the temperatures are warmer and everyone throughout the city is anticipating summertime. Spring is also a wonderful time of year for things to do in Austin. Here are just a few of the events that are coming up this March, April and May.
Get a peak at the origins of modern art at the Blanton Museum of Art. This retrospective features work by Francisco de Goya, one of the most respected artists in human history. The BMA has established itself as one of the premiere art venues in the state and this showcase only furthers that reputation. You can see this show starting in November all the way through the beginning of March. Don’t miss it.
Beerland has long been one of the most popular venues for fun in the city and with their weekly Rock n’ Roll Karaoke, it is easy to see why. Get up on stage and belt out your favourite song every Monday through the spring. As the temps heat up outside, the fun at Beerland heats up, too. The Austin’s Children’s Museum holds a weekly Monday morning play session aimed at the youngest and most precious members of our family.
